A Practical Guide to Remote Work

Workspace, communication, time and wellbeing — everything a remote team needs

Remote work gives you back the commute and lets you work where you focus best. It also removes the hallway chats, the quick questions across the desk and the natural end of the workday. This guide collects practices that make remote work productive and sustainable — for you and for your team.

1

Four pillars of remote work

— What remote teams get right

Successful remote teams pay attention to four things at once. Neglect one, and the others suffer: a great setup will not help if nobody knows when you are available. Click the markers to see what each pillar includes.

Set up your workspace

— Small investments that pay off every day

You will spend hundreds of hours at your desk, so treat the setup as a work tool. It does not need to be expensive — it needs to be comfortable and separate from where you rest.

A simple home workspace: screen at eye level, good light, something green
A desk with a monitor, a laptop on a stand, a mug, a lamp and a plant
  • Screen at eye level, an arm’s length away
  • Chair that supports your lower back
  • Light from the side, not behind the screen
  • Headset for calls in a shared home
  • Backup internet: a phone hotspot is enough
Self-checkWhere should the main light source be relative to your screen?
3

Communicate on purpose

— Choosing the right channel for each message

In an office, information spreads by itself. Remotely, it only travels where you send it. Agree as a team which channel is for what and how fast people are expected to reply.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

Write so that people can respond when they are ready: context, the question and the deadline in one message. Async work respects focus and time zones.

Self-checkMatch each situation with the best channel.

Match each item with its pair

Is the client meeting at 3 or 4?
The project plan for the next quarter
A disagreement about priorities
A request to an external supplier
